When we think of religion we know that it is the structure and rules of our personal beliefs in a higher being. On the other hand, spirituality is the internal aspects that we feel alone, which influences our connection to a higher being. During the middle adulthood stage of life, we often experience a time of change that requires a great sense or relationship with a higher being, most often God in our American society. In middle adulthood we find ourselves in Stage 5: Conjunctive, and this is because we are now returning to the church or religion that we once practiced during our childhood. As these adults began to see and appreciate the unknowable aspects of life, they often turn toward God and seek His guidance and forgiveness. Now that the adult has returned to a religion and is seeking a structured set of rules to follow, they may begin to look further internally and experience a new sense of spirituality within themselves. In this scenario, religion and spirituality work together to help the middle aged adult find a higher being and feel connected with hope of finding answers. The middle aged adult will search for the ultimate truth and optimistically discover aspects of it within their religion and spirituality.
